The Past and Present

College Park Elementary was established in 1970. The building was not finished at the beginning of the school year, so the students and faculty attended the first semester at the Gautier Jr. High School. The first principal was Chester Blalock, who was also the principal of Gautier Jr. High. There were 279 students, 14 teachers and 2 aides.

College Park has had a total of eight principals and five assistant principals. Chester Blalock (1970), Lenonard Fuller (1971), Donal Rigby (1977), Joyce Hamilton-Garrett (1978), Susan McLaurin (1986), Steve Pugh (1991), Gwendolyn Beard, and currently Suzanne Ros. Our first assistant principal Willis "Chip" Walley was shared with Singing River Elementary in 1984. Susan McLaurin became the assistant principal in 1985, Arnold Tillman in 1986, Geraldine Barnes in 1987 and Gwendolyn Beard in 1993.

College Park has received two multi-classroom additions. In 1972, twelve classrooms were added and in 1986, five classrooms were added to supply space for kindergarten classes.

College Park had the "Open" classroom concept from grades 1st-3rd for several years. However Parents, the PTA, along with educators requested that the wall be constructed, and in 1979 with the help of the superintendent this was accomplished.

The mascot of College Park was the Mullet with the colors of red and white. In 1984, a contest was held and the student body selected the Dolphin with the colors being blue and white. Today, the school mascot is the Gator with colors being blue and gold.

Mission Statement

The College Park Staff accepts the mission of providing a learning environment for students which encourages intellectual, emotional, social and physical growth. The goals we strive to have our students achieve are to be independent thinkers, readers, writers, and problems solvers. We encourage students to become self-motivated learners and leaders who are willing to try new technology, know how to communicate, show consideration and respect for others, and to know there are no limits because of gender, race or economic status.
